All the Transitions. One goal.

An Open-Data Initiative for climate transparent cities

Welcome to the Transition Project, an Open Data Initiative (ODI) designed to help enable rapid carbon abatement for cities worldwide. These “Transition Elements” will grow in number and strength through “curation"—a process by which we will leverage experts in the five “essential” economic sectors of moving, dwelling, creating, growing, and resourcing—to validate the figures and sources underlying these assumptions. We aspire to make this data of significant value to scientists, policy leaders, city planners and engineers, and strategists from all backgrounds who we hope will leverage and contribute to this project as we seek to expedite carbon abatement together.

Introducing Transition Elements™: the key to unlocking rapid carbon abatement.

Cities striving for carbon neutrality have a powerful new tool: Transition Elements. These encapsulations of variables, assumptive values, and substantiating references have been developed in association with Sweden’s Panorama project  and in collaboration with the Swedish Climate Policy Council, Environmental Protection Agency, and Energy Agency. The Transition Project™ is pleased to democratize them here for use by academics, NGOs, researchers, and others who are seeking to make rapid carbon abatement a global reality.

Each transition element has its own mathematical model interconnected with all other transition elements.

The Transition Table™: the organizer that makes carbon abatement an economic reality.

Net zero and economic progress are not simply compatible, they’re interdependent. By being minimally disruptive to GDP growth, carbon abatement plans will be adopted faster and more ubiquitously than before. The Transition Table categorizes Transition Elements according to essential human and municipal needs, thereby mapping carbon contributors to classes of economic activities such as moving, dwelling, creating, growing, and resourcing. Each of these columns in our table will be carefully curated by industry-leading experts on decarbonization within that particular economic vertical. Become a curator.

Meet Andrew!

Andrew Salzberg is an urban planner passionate about building the sustainable transportation systems of the future. He leads public policy at Transit, North America’s largest public transportation mobile application. He's also the creator of the Decarbonizing Transportation newsletter. From 2019-2020, he was a Loeb fellow at Harvard where he researched decarbonizing transportation and developed a first-of-its-kind course at MIT on the topic.Andrew will work with us to validate Transportation data contributed to this project by partners and expand upon the Transition Elements, which are digital packages encapsulating variables and assumptive values of all the transitions needed for a city to rapidly abate carbon.

The Transition Project™: the cooperative effort to bring Transition Elements to the planet.

In May of 2020, ClimateView AB, the charter sponsor of the Transition Project and inventor of Transition Targets™—which are set when Transition Elements values are calibrated and balanced inside its proprietary ClimateBoard™—decided to liberalize the underlying data it was collecting from collaborations with European cities and governments. Since reaching carbon neutrality requires transitions from nearly every part of society, and democratic decision-making requires data-driven assumptions and scrutiny thereof, this project was born to provide transparent access to the underlying numerical values and references to stakeholders around the world.
